Timber Grading

Grading-(Web)

We pride ourselves on the quality of our timber PAR and Mouldings and have grouped our grade selections across four colour codes yellow, blue, red and black.

All of our Premier, Select and Standard grades are all machined from Scandinavian Redwood (Pine) sourced from managed and sustainable forests. This is yellow/brown in colour with visibly darker heartwood.

Yellow – Premier Joinery Redwood

Produced from: Original imported joinery sideboards – quality grades 1-4 mixed also referred to as ‘Best’ or ‘Unsorted’.

Characteristics: High quality with smaller knot size and content.  Less prone to shakes or splits and less of a tendency to cup or curl.  Superior to similar nominal size sections offered by other merchants and DIY stores that are not produced from sideboards.  Increased finished size thickness.

Finishing: Suitable for clear or stain finish.

Blue – Select Joinery Redwood

Produced from: Deal Section – quality grades 1-4 mixed also referred to as ‘Best’ or ‘Unsorted’.

Characteristics: Good quality with slightly larger knot size and content when compared with sideboards. Generally better than similar sections produced from standard joinery redwood or whitewood offered by other merchants and DIY stores.

Finishing: Suitable for clear or stain finish.

Red – Standard Joinery Redwood

Produced from: Quality grade 5, also referred to as ‘Fifths’, generally deal sections, except 25mm nominal size PARs which are produced from original imported sideboards.

Characteristics: Larger knot size and content when compared with ‘Unsorted’ and suitable for general use.  Stability and finished size thickness of 25mm nominal size PAR sections is significantly improved by producing these from redwood sideboards.

Finishing: Generally more suited to applications that will not be visible, or those that require finishing in paint.

Black – Whitewood

Produced from: This range of PAR & Mouldings sections is machined from Scandinavian Whitewood (Spruce).

Characteristics: This is yellow/white in colour with no heartwood differentiation, giving it a good basic quality.

Finish: Competitively priced and suited for general construction applications that will not be visible, or those that require finishing in paint.
